Loft ladder installation

Homes with a loft hatch will require some form of ladder to gain access to the loft.

Loft ladders are most commonly hidden in the loft itself, fixed to the loft hatch and boarding so that they can be pulled down when the hatch is opened. This saves space in your home by keeping your ladder from cluttering your landing or spare room.

The installation of a loft ladder is a simple enough loft service by our expert providers, but requires:

  • Accurate measurements of your loft and landing space
  • Robust boarding materials in your loft to hold the ladder into place
  • Adherence to regulations such as European Standard EN 14975

It is also important that your loft ladder is installed along the joists and not across them, otherwise this can cause potential dangers or instability.

What is the best loft ladder?

There is no one ladder that is best for all use cases. Every home will require a different ladder to meet their unique measurements.

When considering types of loft ladders, you have ladders with different materials and ladders with different constructions. This includes timber or aluminium ladders that are:

  • Sliding ladders
  • Folding ladders
  • Concertina ladders
  • Telescopic ladders

Most loft ladders that are used in homes will have anti-slip features on the rungs, and be robust enough to hold a high maximum load. But in terms of features, the best loft ladders may be automatic – this will be reflected in the price.

Automatic loft ladders

The most premier loft ladders are automatic. They are more expensive than standard loft ladders, but definitely do offer a premium feel.

For most homes, where the loft is accessed irregularly for storage, an automatic loft ladder would not be necessary. However, there are some cases where an automatic loft ladder may be needed.

Homes where accessibility is needed may favour automatic loft ladders over manual loft ladders for the ease at which they can be extended and retracted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit a ladder to an existing hatch?

If your current loft hatch has no ladder, then there are certain ladders that you can buy to fit your existing hatch.
You may find that you have to buy a concertina loft ladder if your hatch is particularly small. If it is a bigger size, then you will have more options for ladders to choose from.
If you would like a ladder that you are not currently eligible for, then we can make your existing loft hatch space bigger to accommodate it.

What angle should a loft ladder be?

Loft ladders should sit at an angle of 61o when extended. This is to comply with European Standard EN 14975, and to keep the ladder from being too steep to climb.
Other components of EN 14975 dictate things like minimum weight capacity (150kg), and what distance the steps should be placed from each other.

Are concertina loft ladders any good?

Concertina loft ladders are suitable for properties that have limited space. They can be expensive though, and so they are often reserved for use in more commercial applications rather than in the home.

Are loft ladders standard size?

Most loft ladders will come with a reach of 3m. Wooden loft ladders can be cut to size to suit your requirements, whereas metal loft ladders are either sliding or telescopic so that they can fit in a range of spaces.
